I have a Bachelor's degree in Applied Linguistics, a Master's degree in Translation studies and a Certificate for Teaching German as a Foreign Language. I have been teaching German to secondary school students, university students, working adults and retirees from many different countries for over four years. Beyond my formal academic background I truly love finding the best way for each individual student to learn German and it brings me so much joy to see their progress. I always teach about German culture as well as language and culture go hand in hand. I include songs and videos in my lessons to support the topic and grammar points we are working on. When teaching features of the German language I like to draw on the learner's language knowledge in their own native language to connect dots and make it easier for them to understand and remember the features. It is always easier to build on something you already understand. My lessons are fun and light-hearted - learning a new language should be fun and I make sure all my students enjoy their lessons and feel at ease. Questions and mistakes are always welcome - that's how we learn and improve. My goal in teaching German is always to teach authentic German. That means I will teach correct grammar of course, but will always make sure that we learn the grammar using sentences and phrases people in Germany actually use. Language is shaped by its users so we want to learn German the way people in German-speaking countries do as well.
Learning German is just as easy or difficult as any other language. Every language has aspects that can be difficult depending on the learner's own language background. In my experience, learning German is easy when students are having fun and lessons are adapted to their learning style and learning needs as well as the purpose for their German learning. I make sure to provide that and encourage students to also continue their learning at home in between lessons.
How long it takes to learn German really depends on the number of lessons per week, the intensity of the class and the learner's motivation. Picking up the first few phrases is very fast. Within the first few lessons learners can usually introduce themselves, ask about someone's name and origin, find out someone's profession and hobbies. Becoming fluent in German (or any other language) will take a while longer, because it takes practice and familiarity, but it is so amazing to see how fast students progress and develop a good grasp of the language and start to feel comfortable. Just let me know your learning goal and we will work out a plan to reach it!
